Temping – Opening the door to the rest of your life
– By Lee Farghaly, Finance Assistant (Head Office).
Surely, I can’t be the only person who, when first being asked if I wanted to temp, thought instantly that it was a negative thing, and that having a permanent job was all that mattered?
Oh, how wrong I was.
Perhaps my perception has been changed due to me working for Jobwise at Head Office, and therefore being on the other side of the fence, seeing it in its true colours. Temping will not make you look ‘job hoppy’, as I was guilty of thinking at first. It’ll make potential employers think that you have amassed a large array of knowledge and skills in pursuit of being the best you can be.
Temping (Temporary work for those not down with the kids) can open so many doors for you, and go a long way to setting you up for the rest of your life.
Realities of life
Now everyone knows the realities of life today, and a lot of it isn’t positive. Political strife, Brexit, recessions, companies disappearing, people losing their jobs, and finally, Freddos going up to 30p!
But that’s where Temping opens the door and banishes all of the above into something that doesn’t really affect you. By using temping to develop yourself, you’re essentially making yourself immune to any issues blighting the job market today (although expensive Freddos are something which I cannot see anyone being able to deal with).
Learning new skills. Flexibility. Gaining experience. Getting a foot in the door. Being in control. These are some of the things temping offers you.
Imagine learning within months how to use different software within several different companies. This is a distinct possibility if you temp. Potential employers would want people with knowledge of different software, the more, the better. If you have a good knowledge of software they use themselves, then you’ve hit the jackpot!
Flexibility and experience
Flexibility is what temping is all about. You are in control of your career, and it’s far easier to take career breaks and mould your job around your life. Perfect work-life balance is what we all strive for.
If there’s a dream company, in particular, you want to work for; a temp role could be your foot in the door. Once they see how well you fit the company, how will they be able to resist? You’d also have a massive head start on anyone interviewing with the company for the first time.
You will gain experience of different environments, people, sectors, the possibilities are endless. Therefore, not only will you be developing your skillset for a potential employer, you’ll be helping to develop yourself as a person. Interacting with different people, from different backgrounds, cannot fail to benefit us as people. Interactions with our peers are what life is about after all!
You are in control. You are the master of your own destiny. You are a temp.
